About Bill Finewood
Most people don’t take the opportunity to look at every feather on a graceful Great Blue Heron or observe all the vegetation surrounding a fidgety Ground Squirrel. I do!
My personal studies in Illustration, interest in biology and a surprisingly lengthy career so far have provided me with plenty of practical knowledge and understanding. My personal nature and curiosity have given me permission to create Art that reveals all the most important information I can observe within my subjects and their surroundings.
These experiences present remarkable artistic opportunities, enabling me to visually communicate with a broad spectrum of everyday folks through commercially proficient professionals, while guiding students working in a variety of media ranging from traditional painting, drawing and sculpture to digital techniques.
I’m a professional artist and educator. I was born, raised and lived the majority of my life in the small village of Newark, NY. I earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from Syracuse University and worked in illustration/graphic design for the greater part of my professional life. I recently retired as an Associate Professor and Coordinator of the Illustration program from the School of Art (rit.edu/artdesign/schools/art) at Rochester Institute of Technology.
Inspiration for my work comes from many places including where I live, work and play. My small town is located on the Erie Canalway and also very close to the scenic Finger Lakes region of New York State. My summers are spent with family in Northwest Montana in Whitefish and Libby, both offering spectacular views wherever you look. It's a short 45 minute drive east to the west entrance of Glacier National Park as well as great fishing on the Flathead River and to the west I travel to Libby, MT for more fishing on the Kootenai River.
My work has been commissioned by clients including: Xerox, Mobil, DuPont, Holt Rinehart and Winston, Citibank, Federal Reserve Bank, Dunn and Bradstreet, Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, Nalge Company, Time, Fly Rod & Reel, Flyfisherman, Habitat for Humanity and Fisher-Price Toys. My dimensional illustrations have been exhibited in shows including the Society of Illustrators, Dimensional and Digital Illustrators Awards Show and American Illustration. I have served as a member of the board of directors for ICON4 (The Illustration Conference 4, San Francisco) and served as a member of the Board of Directors of Wayne County Council for the Arts, Inc.
